Highway 99 Road Report
Travel Advisory Report
Culliton-to-Cheakamus Highway 99 Improvement Project
Work on the Sea-to-Sky Highway upgrades will begin April 28, 2003 on the section of the highway between Culliton Creek (BOB) and Cheakamus Canyon.
This section of highway is one of the most challenging in terms of delays and closures due to the fact that there are no detour options for this section and work will take place in a constricted area very close to the highway.
Tourism Whistler (with its in-resort partners, including the RMOW, Resort businesses and transportation operators) has been involved in the consultation process with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways (MoTH) since the beginning to ensure that the plan for the highway and the resulting construction and closure schedule meet the needs of the resort and our guests.
While the MoTH has been very proactive in seeking consultation on this project in order to minimize the impacts of construction on tourism, there are still some periods in which guests and Resort employees will be affected:
- Evening closures starting in the last week of March will impact long-haul, peak-season travelers departing Whistler at 4:00 a.m. between Monday and Thursday
- A highway opening between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. will accommodate all late evening arrivals and late-shift employee departures
- Evening closures between June 2 and July 31, 2003 will begin at 8:00 p.m. and primarily impact travel in July when traffic to the resort is increased
- A highway opening between midnight and 2:00 a.m. will accommodate evening arrivals and late shift employee departures
